We’ve all seen the intense reactions of those concerned about race and inequality in the time since the tragic death of George Floyd. As concerned citizens and college students, many of you may have participated in the many peaceful protests designed to spur action nationwide. Speaking on behalf of the leadership team here at Major Decision, I hope that the energy and power demonstrated will bring about lasting change.
Today’s conversations are very much in keeping with the Mission and Values of Major Decision:
• Inclusiveness - We believe that everyone has a unique perspective and story to tell. We value the diversity of you, our Student Advisors, and encourage college students of all racial and ethnic groups, gender identification and backgrounds to apply.
As you know, if you are an enrolled college student, you are welcome to join and to share your story, perspectives and advice as a Major Decision Student Advisor. Diversity is what will continue to make us strong, reflects the communities we serve, and helps foster meaningful connections and understanding.
• Openness and Honesty – When we say “The right conversation can make all the differenceTM”, we’re all expressing the belief that listening, thoughtful responses, and open and honest discussion can drive informed decision and action. Your personal experiences and willingness to share will be the difference.
• Safety – While we usually speak of safety in terms of the Major Decision online environment, we hope you’ll be safe and respect the safety of those around you.
As I have listened over the past weeks, I have come to understand that we need to expand Major Decision’s community involvement in order to be an agent of change for justice and equality, in addition to addressing the stigma of mental illness in young adults.
In recognition of the need to back up words with action, I’m announcing that we are expanding our philanthropic efforts. In addition to our continued support of Active Minds, beginning today, we will also make donations to The Education Trust. Below is their mission statement:
The Education Trust is a national nonprofit that works to close opportunity gaps that disproportionately affect students of color and students from low-income families. Through our research and advocacy, Ed Trust supports efforts that expand excellence and equity in education from preschool through college, increase college access and completion, particularly for historically underserved students, engage diverse communities dedicated to education equity, and increase political and public will to act on equity issues.
Thank you for being part of Major Decision. We encourage you all to use your voices, your actions, your votes, and your hearts to drive change. For our part, we will continue to strive to contribute to your success and to be a positive force in our shared community.
